Mrs. Melissa Vogan
Instructor of Forest School, Student Council Advisor, Journalism Co-teacher
Melissa Vogan wasn’t born in Texas but got here as fast as she could (at age 2). She grew up in Dallas in the public school system and was the editor-in-chief of her high school newspaper, The Bagpipe. At Rice University, she earned a B.A. in Linguistics and married Bluebonnet’s chess instructor, Mark Vogan.
They served for two years in Central Asia working with Young Life and helping plant a church. Since returning to the Houston area, they have had ten children. In the Vogan family there are 7 girls and 3 boys, ages 21 to 5. This year Melissa and Mark will have the joy of their oldest daughter, Becca, also working at Bluebonnet.
The Vogans have always homeschooled, and they joined Bluebonnet Scholars as soon as they could. Being in the Bluebonnet community has been such a great way to add depth and interest to their homeschool. They attend Southwest Presbyterian Church in Bellaire, and they spend significant time helping with the youth group and the mission committee. For the last 25 years Melissa has always been teaching a Sunday school class, helping at VBS, volunteering with the youth group, or leading small group discussions at church.
Melissa has far more hobbies and interests than time. She enjoys running and indoor rock climbing as well as reading historical fiction. In the last year she has started quilting five minutes at a time, and those five minutes have added up to 3.5 quilts so far. The lesson is that diligence in the small things adds up to a larger beautiful outcome.
