Mrs. Dorian Speed
Instructor of Latin, Writing, and Journalism
Dorian Speed is a writer, educator, and speaker. For the past 20 years, she has taught middle and high school students in a variety of settings. Dorian graduated with bachelor’s degrees in History and Economics, along with a Master of Arts in Teaching, from Trinity University in San Antonio. She taught social studies at the middle school level in the San Antonio Independent School District, then taught theology at a Catholic high school in her hometown of Athens, Georgia. She and her husband moved back to Texas when their three children were young. She educated her children at home for several years, followed by a position teaching fifth grade at St. Theresa Catholic School in Sugar Land.
Dorian recently received an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of St. Thomas. She has contributed articles to various publications, most recently an essay on the writer Muriel Spark in the collection Women of the Catholic Imagination: Twelve Inspired Novelists You Should Know. She is currently working on a nonfiction book comparing the lives and work of mid-century authors Flannery O’Connor and Muriel Spark, as well as a novel.
Dorian and her family are active parishioners at St. Theresa’s, where they have been involved in the choir, religious education, and the popular “Date Night” ministry. She enjoys exploring the cultural landscape of the Houston area, particularly the Museum District. Homeschooling has offered their family the flexibility to take advantage of the many opportunities that our area offers for the joyful pursuit of beauty and knowledge. In her spare time, Dorian enjoys playing the piano, reading, various craft projects, and spending time with friends. She is very grateful for the Bluebonnet community.
